Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of the proposed research is to develop a practical and theoretical basis for the design of a new generation of adsorbents which are constructed in monolithic form, this form being usable in industrial applications that include, inter alia, military defence, gas separation and air purification. The project will take an integrated approach to the development of a design model, relying on characterisation and process testing to inform development of the model. The research will comprise three main tasks: (i) development of a rigorous design model for adsorption in monolithic structures, (ii) determination of the intrinsic performance characteristics of the adsorbent matrix for incorporation into the model, and (iii) experimental determination of monolith performance and comparison with the model predictions. The deliverables will be a design methodology and a design capability for producing, in the first instance, activated carbon monoliths that are optimised for military personal and collective protection.
