The common theme of the entire programme is the form-finding of engineering components and structures, based on design principles that are know to be remarkably effective in naturally occurring forms (trees, shells, bones).The proposed work will concentrate on computational simulation of a variety of form-finding techniques, such as gravitational load models, soapanalogy, and von Mises constant stress analogy, with the view to producing natural shapes of civil engineering structures, such as shells, suspense bridge cables, and mechanical engineering components, e.g., turbine blades. With regard to suspemsion cables, non-linear analysis will be carried to establiush the initial shape of the cable subjected to the deck and cable weight, using a variety of hanger arrangements, and including elastic effe The shape definition of turbine blades will be led by structural form-finding using several techniques described above.. All form-finding processes involve iterations with regard to the shape and the boundaries of the structure. The work will be supported by physical modelling and op measurements of the geometry and vibrations of the models.
