Summary on Grant Application Form |
The study of a new class of amplitude equations governing the evolution of Faraday waves in nearly inviscid liquids in three dimensions is proposed. These equations describe the interaction between the surface waves and mean flows driven by mean Reynolds stresses in oscillatory boundary layers along no-slip walls and the free surface. These equations will be derived in three cases: (i) single standing wave in a right cylindrical container with a slightly elliptical cross-section, (ii) mode-mode interaction in a container with a circular cross-section, and (iii) mode-mode interaction in square and almost square containers. The role of the mean flow in destabilizing the basic standing wave patterns will be investigated in regimes in which the Navier-Stokes-like equation for the mean flow simplifies, and explicit calculations for brimful containers (to pin the contact line) will be carried out.
