The aim of this research is to investigate the development of numerical methods for systems and control which have a guarantee on accuracy. An endproduct of such research is an algorithm where the user would specify a tolerance as small as desired a priori, and the computer would provide an answer which was guaranteed to be accurate to the specified tolerance.The research will investigate basic principles for such validated numerical algorithms. The research also aims to develop guaranteed accuracy algorithms to compute some of the common norms of control analysis and design, such as the L-infinity and H-2 norms, as well as other quantities used for analysis such as the nu-gap metric.The research will consider the extent to which guaranteed accuracy procedures can be developed for some common methods of controller synthesis, such as H-infinity optimisation. It is expected that algorithms will be developed in Maple (and/or possibly Mathematica, Macsyma) and will be made available through the World Wide Web at the conclusion of the project.
