Urban regeneration in the UK has led to increasing numbers of development projects in areas which have a long history of human settlement. Modern construction processes can generate large stress changes in the soil. Current government guidance (PPG16) prioritises the preservation of archaeological remains in situ for future generations. Thus archaeologists and engineers working together on damage mitigation strategies require an indication of the probability of damage occurring to archaeological remains. An artefact can be considered as an inclusion in a sedimentary matrix and the probability of a given level of damage occurring will depend on the nature and duration of the applied stresses, the composition of the sedimentary matrix, the boundary conditions of the stratum and surrounding soils, and the strength, stiffness, relative size, angularity and variability of the inclusion. Different soils seeded with artefacts of known relative shape, size, strength and stiffness will be subjected to a range of state paths to obtain damage survival probability data. Archaeological and geomechanical data will be synthesised to formulate a decision making algorithm usable by engineers and archaeologists
