Summary on Grant Application Form
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a waste group subject to recent EU legislation, including ambitious recycling and recovery targets. Over 95 % of such waste is currently landfilled, since it represents a difficult waste to recycle. The plastic component of WEEE is to be collected as a separate waste fraction. Brominated flame retardant containing plastics are a major component of WEEE. There are environmental and health concerns associated with the accumulation of brominated flame retardants in the environment. The bromine content of WEEE represents a major hindrance to the development of recycling technologies. This proposal investigates a thermal process to recover the bromine from waste brominated flame retardant plastics. The process involves combustion of the plastic waste and subsequent absorption of the evolved hydrogen bromide. The two main aims of the research are a detailed investigation of the process parameters involved in the thermal processing of brominated flame retardant plastics and the optimisation of the sorption of the liberated bromine species.
