Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is intended to support Professor Prakash Panangaden (McGill, Canada) as a Visiting Fellow for joint research with the Principal Investigator, Professor Samson Abramsky (Oxford). The two main strands of this work will be- Quantum Information and computation. The aim here is to build on preliminary work by both the PI and VF develop high-level' approaches to quantum computation and information, building connections with established approaches to high-level languages, logics and type theories for classicalcomputation. Key ingredients of our approach will be ideas from Linear logic, geometry of Interaction, Game Semantics, and recent work by Coecke andMartin (post-does in Abramsky's group) on domains of classical and quantum states.- Foundations of Probabilistic Inference and Computation. Building on the extensive previous work by Panangaden and his collaborators, we will seek to develop methods for approximate verification of probabilistic processes. This is likely to involve interaction with Professor Roscoe and his group at Oxford_ We will also investigate the range of approaches to probabilistic inference used by different communities, with the aims both of developing a general approach at a more abstract level, and of giving sound operational interpretations of how probabilities are used in modelling computational systems.
