Summary on Grant Application Form |
The focus of this proposal is on new and efficient representations of images. As the wavelet transform has shown, a basis that provides compact representation of images is useful in several signal processing applications. Recently, it has become more evident that the traditional separable wavelet transform is not well suited for images. Thus, there is a strong motivation to search for more powerful schemes. The first aim of this proposal is to design a new basis that is more efficient than wavelets at representing images. In particular, we plan to introduce a discrete directional wavelet transform that extends some of the properties of the traditional wavelet transform, but keeps the simplicity of the separable transform. We then plan to use this new scheme to develop new algorithms for different image processing applications. In particular, we plan to develop a new image compression and a new image restoration algorithm.
