Summary on Grant Application Form
Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a material which is increasingly widely used for blue and green light emitting diodes and laser diodes. There are however many properties of this remarkable material which have yet to be exploited. This application requests funding for Dr Ghulam Hasnain to work as a Visiting Fellow for one year in the UK, bringing his established component expertise. Although based in Cambridge for much of the time, he will collaborate closely with several other established University groups so as to maximise the benefit of his visit and the progress of the proposed project. As a result of this unique combination, it is proposed that a range of new topics can be studied for the first time, building on the rapidly advancing growth and materials research in the UK at several Universities. The primary emphasis will be to develop more advanced GaN devices with additional functionality. By devising advanced components with special photonic crystal reflectors and multiple device contacts, enhanced performance will be achieved. These advances will in turn allow a better understanding of the material so that standard devices at new wavelengths such as in the amber can then be envisaged.
