Summary on Grant Application Form
Despite increasing speed, current computers can still not compete with the biological brain in tasks such as perception, recognition, creativity and decision-making. The reason is that the powerful computational principles used in the brain are still mostly unknown. It is proposed to approach this problem from a new angle, focusing on the role of complex neural activity, oscillations and waves. These have been observed for years in relation to almost all neural activities, but their origin is not understood. Through close collaborations of neuroscientists and modelers (mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists) in a range of complementary areas of science, the project will create the possibility of exciting new results to further our understanding of computational processes in the brain and create a theoretical basis for describing spatio-temporal patterns of neural activity. Expected benefits include improved medical diagnostic and monitoring, more refined human-machine interfaces, more powerful computing paradigms, intelligent perception and action systems, and the specification of new dedicated hardware devices.
