The mission will be to focus on innovation in retail value chain to improve non-competitiveness, principally in non-food.To compete in a changing market, retailers are having to innovate by managing the value chain more effectively. Much of the research on retail logistics has focused on the grocery sector, partly because of the availability of data, but also because UK grocery chains are renowned for logistical innovation. They are entering anew stage of growth, especially with the introduction of Wal-Mart to the market. E-Commerce is another driver fuelling change. The change in the grocers' product mix into general merchandising and fashion retailing will lead to a re-configuration of their existing supply chains. In the conventional fashion business much of the research in this area is dervied from the US where studies have been undertaken on quick response initiatives in response to voerseas competition. However, UK research is small scale and fragmented and its it the purpose of this bid to integrate the work currently being carried out by academics, practitioners and trade assoications. Indeed, retailing has suffered from lack of investment in research, which EPSRC itself recognises (EPSRC 2000).
