Research in haptic interfaces and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) has combined to produce recent interest in distributed haptic systems. Prototype devices and software now allow users to share a basic sense of three-dimensional touch across computer networks. Distributed haptics research has primarily emerged from design strategies in Virtual Reality (VR) which focuses on the realistic simulation of interaction. However, recent studies of human collaboration in quasi-realistic simulations show that the differences between human and computational systems can cause significant problems for users. Given the current differences between even advanced distributed haptic systems and the human haptic system, collaboration problems are likely to emerge as new possibilities are deployed. Therefore, support for users' methods of coping with these differences needs to be developed alongside improvements to haptic realism itself. However, there have been few studies of distributed haptic users, and none particularly focused on supporting collaboration. This proposal applies for a PhD studentship and technical resources to adopt an interaction analysis approach for developing haptic collaboration solutions. Overall, the aim is to extend the proposer's interaction analysis research to discovering communication issues and solutions by applying the method to distributed haptics systems.
