F.IDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, has been responsible for producing standard forms of contracts for a range of types and sizes of construction and engineering projects tendered on an international basis. In 1999 it produced four new standard forms to replace all earlier, contracts. In the drafting of these new contracts it was a policy decision to move away from F IDIC s previous practice of adopting UK-based concepts, terminology and contracting practices. Knowledge of the operation of these contracts and potential sources of disputes is important for reasons of dispute prevention and efficiency. The aim of the proposed research is to develop and disseminate such knowledge. It entails running rnulti-disciplinary workshops, conferences and on-line discussion in which the following issues will subjected to critical examination: extent of use of the forms, amendments commonly made and reasons for them, the new role of the Engineer, evidence of employer's financial arrangement to be supplied to contractors, value engineering, risk allocation , contractor's claims, Employer's claims, dispute resolution by adjudication, best practice in contract administration and implications for contract policies of international funding agencies
