Summary on Grant Application Form |
A new method for studying initial-boundary value problems for integrable PDE's has been recently introduced by the PI and extended by several researchers. An important ingredient of the new method is the realisation that the problem of determining the missing boundary values for a given boundary value problem can be reduced to the analysis of a certain global algebraic relation satisfied by those boundary values. This analysis has led to what appears to be a new formulation of the classical two-dimensional water waves. This analysis will be extended to three dimensions and the mathematical structure of the equations obtained will be elucidated. Furthermore, the small amplitude, long wave limit of this formulation will be studied. It is expected that this will yield the KP as well as other integrable PDE's.
