Summary on Grant Application Form
Periodically poled crystals are becoming the standard for current high efficiency nonlinear optical devices. This proposal will explore the next generation of two dimensionally poled crystals with the aim of looking for novel designs capable of manipulating light in different ways simultaneously. Initially we will look at crystals which can simultaneously phase match two nonlinear interactions for third harmonic generation (current high efficiency designs use two crystals). Then we will look at crystals which are capable of frequency doubling, compressing and focussing optical pulses - again something which conventionally requires separate elements for each process. Lastly we will look at the generation of correlated photons for quantum information processing and see how novel crystals can lead to improved high brightness sources. Such crystals will also be examined for their use in non-collinear chirped pulse parametric amplification with multiple pump beams. This work will improve our understanding of the poling process as every more complicated patterns are designed and fabricated. Incorporating planar waveguides into our crystals will improve their efficiencies thus reducing the powers needed to see nonlinear effects. The experience we gain with waveguide fabricate will in turn feedback to the ongoing waveguide fabrication project and
