Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Birmingham superconductivity Portfolio programme concentrates on the study of the science and applications of superconducting thin films. There is a major emphasis on the development of new multi-component thin film structures. Both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric thin films in combination with superconductors are being developed in order to study basic physics and develop new applications. The primary method of deposition of these films is pulsed laser deposition, monitored by a RHEED system. To study and optimise these films a range of techniques will be used, these will include low energy muons, scanning probe microscopy and microwave radiation. Applications studies include mobile communications receivers (with the spin-out company CryoSystems), delay lines (with BAE SYSTEMS) and low loss filters in radio astronomy (with Jodrell bank).
