This is a proposal for a research cluster to explore novel mathematical and computational models of complex systems, drawing on evolutionary concepts from biology, and to apply these models to the study, design and control of man-made, hybrid and natural systems. Our starting point will be biological paradigms and concepts arising from the study of the evolution and co-evolution of living organisms, and their interactions together. Our methods will utilize mathematical and computational techniques which are still novel in this domain, primarily those arising in statistical physics and algebraic topology, and systems of autonomous and intelligent computational agents. Our aim for these models is to better understand the properties and dynamics of natural systems (such as ecosystems), man-made systems (such as the Internet), and hybrid systems (such as when artificial imaging devices are placed inside a human patient's body for medical diagnosis). With better understanding will come better capabilities for the design of man-made and hybrid systems, and for the control of all three types of systems. In essence, we wish to develop models of these systems to enable us to design and manage complex systems by evolution rather than by diktat.
