Major Theme. Professor Barbour has much expertise on modelling the effect of dynamic moisture fluxes through saturated and unsaturated soils. Moisture changes in soils can occur due to rainfall events, temperature changes and vegetation. By developing a numerical model to simulate the changes in soils strength due to moisture movement and pore pressure changes, it is intended to study the effect of long term climate change on the stability of highway cuttings in tills. The models will be validated using data from two fully instrumented sites on the Northern Ireland road network. These sites have been provided by the Roads Service (Department for Regional Development) and have a number of piezometers already installed. Piezometers have also been installed at a location where a cutting is to be excavated next year and it is intended to monitor pore pressure changes during excavation of the cutting. Minor Theme. Much research is ongoing at QUB on the design of reactive barriers for the insitu treatment of contaminated groundwater. This work is part of the First Faraday initiative. Professor Barbour will work with this research group developing numerical models to simulate the movement of contaminants in the unsaturated zones around permeable reactive barriers. Data from existed full-scale trails will be used to validate these models.
