Numerical simulation of lifting rotors in forward flight is a very challenging problem, but of huge significance to Westland Helicopters. Bristol and Glasgow have been involved in previous projects toward this goal, and it is proposed to extend current flow-solver technology to rotors in forward flight. This will be achieved by developing simulation and grid generation methods capable of accounting for multiple bodies in relative motion. This will allow for sliding grid planes to enable inclusion of rotor disk, fuselage and/or tail rotor and aeroelastic effects. The resulting codes will be used to examine, for example, composite rotor blade design. In parallel with simulation tool development, advanced experimental flow visualisation techniques will be developed using the shadowgraph method, and some of the data produced will be used to validate the simulation tools.
