Summary on Grant Application Form |
We aim to make fundamental measurements on the various 3He superfluids and the phase boundaries and transitions between them at the lowest attainable temperatures where the liquids are essentially pure condensates. We will exploit our own unique advanced techniques for temperature and energy measurement, for the manipulation of the superfluid phase boundaries, and for the visualisation of superfluid 3He quantum voracitySpecific plans include (among other things): 1. A superfluid 3He cell on which we can impress a severe magnetic field minimum. This will allow us to levitate a bubble of B phase within the A phase isolated from contact with walls. This provides us with an ideal 'pure' nucleation setup. 2. Using the shaped fields possible with this cell we intend to examine the thermal conductance of a stack of alternating A-B, B-A interfaces. 3. We intend to continue our studies of localised voracity and to make a mufti-pixel vorticity'camera' to observe the evolution of a tangle of vortices via its projected timevarying image (the vortex 'video'). 4. We hope to use the field-minimum cell to trap vorticity within the closed phase interface of the levitated B phase and study the leakage or otherwise of the vorticity across the phase boundary (the vortex 'cage').
