This proposal is applying for the resources to support a 4 month visiting fellowship (over 3 years) to give the Inter-disciplinary Optimisation Laboratory at the University of Nottingham the opportunity to work with Prof. Jacek Blazewicz of Poznan Institute of Technology in Poland. This exciting project will take the Operational Research expertise of the Inter-disciplinary Optimisation Lab and Prof Blazewicz into an exciting new application area: Bioinformatics and DNA Mapping. Both the laboratory and Prof Blazewicz have significant recent experience in developing and investigating Operational Research techniques for Bio-informatics applications. During the 4 months (over 3 years) we will particularly concentrate upon meta-heuristic approaches to DNA mapping. This is an area that could benefit from recent work by the Inter-disciplinary Optimisation Lab in protein folding. Prof Blazewicz's expertise in DNA mapping will provide us with the opportunity to build on our current expertise in Bio-informatics and to investigate promising new avenues of research in the area. In addition, during the 4 months of Prof. Blazewicz's visit, we will also begin initial collaborative investigations into meta-heuristic parallel scheduling methods. This is a completely different application area but both Prof Blazewicz and the Interdisciplinary Optimisation Lab (and the Automated Schedulina. Ootimisation and Plannina Research Grouo) have extensive experience in scheduling.
