Summary on Grant Application Form
Recent international events have clearly demonstrated the need for increased regional, national (and international) control systems capable of maximising the use of intelligence from both real-time acquisition and post-event analysis. Key to providing this is the need for a national network for high bandwidth information exchange with interfaces to both mobile and rapidly deployable units. Furthermore, the capture and secure transmission of high quality multimedia information from multiple sources will be of paramount importance. This implies the need for a flexible national network incorporating broadband technology including WLAN, satellite, fibre and direct-link microwave components. This purpose of this research programme is to provide new means of support for both planned and reactive operations through the flexible acquisition and manipulation of high quality video data using advanced WLAN technology. Enhanced performance will be obtained through optimisation of both video (view) quality and radio performance during network deployment using advanced propagation modelling tools. Finally, post and during-event analysis of video material will offer improved visualisation through the use of arbitrary viewpoint synthesis techniques. This will assist in maximising the utility of surveillance information leading to improved operations management. This project will also contribute to NSBTU in its understanding of key enabling technologies in support of its iMAST (Information Management and Supporting Technologies) strategy project.
