Summary on Grant Application Form
We hypothesise that enhancing the microbial diversity in a bioremediation system will enhance the stability and capacity for biodegradation in that system. Exploiting recent theoretical developments in the estimation of microbial diversity we seek to measure and manipulate the naturally occurring biodiversity in bioreactors treating waters contaminated with challenging pollutants. To this end we propose: adapting the published theory (too permit the use of variable data), conducting baseline studies on diversity and factors controlling diversity, heuristically manipulating diversity in bench scale reactors. The lessons learnt at the bench scale will be evaluated at the pilot scale both for reproducibility and impact on function.
