Summary on Grant Application Form
This multidisciplinary research programme addresses the important, but poorly understood, near-surface deformed layers on aluminium alloys that have been subjected to thermomechanical processing. It aims to provide scientific understanding of the evolution of the near-surface deformed layers, and to assess their influence on the corrosion behaviour of aluminium alloys. An experimental programme will be undertaken to attain the objectives. The thickness, structure and uniformity of the near-surface deformed layer will be characterised by using analytical transmission electron microscope. The relationship between the thermomechanical processing parameters and the microstructure of the near-surface deformed layer will be investigated. The chemistry of the near-surface deformed layer will be studied by using spatially resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). The assessment of corrosion susceptibility will be based on the accelerated laboratory corrosion test results and electrochemical measurment of the near-surface layer. Materials' ultramicrotomy and ion beam thinning techniques will be employed to prepare electron transparent thin foil specimen for TEM examination and corrosion testing.
