Summary on Grant Application Form |
Neuroinformatics is a new activity at the intersection of the physical sciences and the neurosciences. The aim is to use new computational methods to increase our understanding of the nervous system in health and disease. In addition, analysis of neural systems will inspire faster and more efficient computing systems. In this new interdisciplinary field there is a great need for neuroinformatics practitioners to come together to develop the subject and to explore its impact on related areas. We propose to build the UK neuroinformatics community by establishing the first UK neuroinformatics network. The scientific content will focus on multilevel computational modelling and the supporting computational tools, an area in which the UK is particularly strong. Through a combination of web-based communication, workshops, themed group activities and small meetings, the neuroinformatics community will be developed. The network will be open, with activities driven by the community. It is anticipated that activities will include the identification of growth areas for UK neuroinformatics in relation to basic and clinical neurosciences, development of links with pharmaceutical and computer companies, identification of training needs and developing a voice for UK neuroinformatics in the national and international arenas. The proposed network will act as the UK node within the international neuroinformatics network recently proposed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
