Summary on Grant Application Form |
Diode-pumped vertical external cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) are an exciting new category of semiconductor laser offering high average powers in circularly-symmetric, diffraction-limited output beams, and ready facility for ultrashort pulse (ps, fs) and single frequency operation. We propose - for the first time, to our knowledge - to extend this technology to direct operation at visible wavelengths, using a combination of proprietary design and fabrication techniques. These devices will be of significance in a host of applications including laser projection displays, metrology, spectroscopy, and nonlinear frequency conversion into the ultraviolet.Furthermore, we propose a novel microchip design of VECSEL where an optically-transparent heatspreader (sapphire, SiC or diamond) bonded to the surface of the VECSEL structure also forms the body of the cavity and serves as an intracavity (spatial/spectral) mode and polarisation control element. This approach should allow integrated VECSEL microchips of <1 cubic mm to be obtained, for high-performance mass-production of these devices at modest cost.
