The principal objective of the proposed study is to resolve the long-standing problem of consistent modelling of open and enclosed buoyant turbulent diffusion flames above combustible liquids. The practically important critical and transient phenomena will be addressed and quantified, including oscillations of open flame in still air, flame tilting and blow-off in a cross-wind, whirling and precession of open and enclosed flames, and flame development and exhaust in the enclosures.The study will be pursued in conjunction with the models, approaches and software previously developed by the research team, the novel advances in modelling of turbulent reacting flows and experiments performed in a wide range of spatial scales. This will provide an in-depth analysis and modelling of radiative feedback between heat release in flame and fuel evaporation, which is responsible for critical and transient phenomena in self-sustained diffusion combustion of liquid fuels.The research will provide an insight into fundamentals of diffusion combustion of liquids. The outcomes of the project, including threedimensional computer code for high performance computers and non-dimensional general relationships and dependencies will have direct applications to fire research and engineering, industrial safety, hazards identification and assessment.
