Summary on Grant Application Form |
The development of room temperature operating, high energy resolution semiconductor detectors (CdTe and CdZnTe) for applications in medical diagnostics have been expanding for over two decades, with a considerable speed-up in the last few years, as significant progress in material technology has been made. We propose a design of a new generation PET scanner based on semiconductor detectors, which will enable the exploration of new concepts in extending imaging capabilities. The use of high energy resolution detectors allows the extraction of information contained in the annihilation radiation scattered within the imaged object, as well as that carried by the 3y annihilation photons, both of which are at present entirely discarded and partially contribute to the noise component of the image. The project will focus on feasibility studies of the new idea of coupling Compton imaging with PET, by means of theoretical analysis, extensive computer simulations and simple proof-of-principle experiments. In parallel, discussion with a variety of potential collaborators from research, clinical and industrial sectors will be held to promote these concepts in order to form an effective consortium able to carry out the construction of the prototype PET scanner and explore thoroughly its capabilities. As an outcome, detailed design and development project will be prepared and submitted for funding.
