The past 10 years has seen a renaissance in main group chemistry which in group 13 has been spearheaded by the rapid development of the chemistry of low oxidation state group 13 halide and alkyl complexes. Of these, the metal(I) diyls, :MR, have proved to be extremely useful ligands and can be thought of as singlet carbene analogues. In a preliminary study we have utilised our expertise in low oxidation state group 13 chemistry to devise a high yielding synthetic route to an anionic Ga(l) heterocycie which is related to metal(I) diyls and is isoelectronic to the ubiquitous N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) class of ligand. We have demonstrated the validity of these analogies with the synthesis of a series of highly novel p- and d-block metal complexes which have interesting properties. We propose to extend this chemistry to the preparation of a variety of anionic group 13 NHC analogues and to systematically investigate their coordination chemistry. An examination of the unusual structural and bonding characteristics of the prepared complexes will be carried out. In addition, a preliminary study will probe the use of group 13 NHC analogues in organic synthesis. This project is adventurous and is very likely to produce results of international significance to main group chemistry.
