Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks funds for supporting a collaboration between Professor Carpenter (Warwick) and Professor Sen (IIT Delhi). The research project aims to develop deterministic theoretical models for the near-wall flow structures in turbulent flows. These structures are widely considered to be responsible for generating the strong wall shear stress seen in turbulent flows. This process is quasi-periodic and highly intermittent. What is needed for designing and understanding flow control methods aiming to reduce or increase wall shear stress, such as compliant walls, MEMS, polymer additives, and riblets, is a deterministic theoretical model of the near-wall flow processes that captures the essential physics but is relatively simple to use. Both researchers have separately made significants recent advances in this direction and propose combining their two approaches.
