Describe the proposed research using (about 200) words geared to the non-specialist reader.The National Service for continuous wave Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy will provide access to state-of-the-art measurement and interpretation free at the point of use to all EPSRC funded researchers engaged in projects involving paramagnetic systems. EPR gives complementary data to other techniques, but has the advantage of allowing direct measurement of key parameters (e.g. S, D, g, A) that may only be obtained indirectly otherwise. EPR spectroscopy can underpin a very wide range of science, e.g. organic D-A dyad charge transfer materials; structural/functional models for e.g. galactose oxidase, NiFe hydrogenase, DMSO reductase; structural defects in C nanotubes; co-ordination chemistry; polymerisation catalysis; nano-porous materials; interfacial electron transfer; electrochromic materials; potential chemotherapeutic agents; organic magnets; single molecule magnets; molecular wires; DNA intercalation; food science. This science will continue, but will be enhanced by the extension to using a commercial W-band spectrometer, only the second in the UK. In particular the new instrumentation will also support new areas of research such as diamonds, medical diagnostics and semiconductors.
