Japan has been subject to severe wave and tidal conditions along its coastline, and advanced coastal monitoring and modelling techniques have been developed for many years, including the research work carried out by Professors Watanabe and Isobe, from Laboratory of Coastal Engineering, University of Tokyo, Japan. Since the wave and tidal conditions in Japan are similar to those experienced in many parts of the UK, Japanese knowledge and understanding in defending the coastline and both monitoring and predicting coastal impacts are valuable and applicable to engineering practice in the UK, with modifications in some cases. Such knowledge is particularly relevant and useful to the Liverpool Group's on-going research projects such as LEACOAST, which is studying the short-term morphological change produced by a series of near-shore breakwaters at Sea Palling, Norfolk. It is therefore believed that collaboration between the Universities of Tokyo and Liverpool will be mutually beneficial to the collaborative parties. It will not only provide significant added value to Liverpool's current and future research activities by being able to obtain first-hand expertise from the world leading scientists in Japan, but also provide an excellent opportunity for the most recent UK research results and training opportunities to be promoted and disseminated in the host country for research and training. It is also hoped that such a collaborative link can be extended to a wider UK research and learning community with common interested areas and experience.This proposal is to seek support for a single visit to the University of Tokyo by a member of the Liverpool Coastal Modelling Group to initiate and identify the areas of future collaboration on modelling techniques, exchange of laboratory and field data, and collaborative research projects and publications.
