Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal seeks modest funds to enable the PI to visit two laboratories in China in which key work is underway in the field of mechanical spectroscopy of solids. This will provide the opportunity to discuss future plans for collaborative work in the area of domain wall mobility in pero vskites. The dynamic response of transformation-induced twin structures to an external force (either a mechanically-applied stress in the case of ferroelastic materials, or an electric field in the case of ferroelectric materials) is of fundamental importance in a wide range of fields spanning solid state physics, materials science, and geology. The interaction of mobile ferroelectric domain walls with lattice defects is a key factor in determining the lifetime of ferroelectric memory devices. The creation and displacement of domain walls in martensitic alloys leads to the shape memory effect. More pertinently, movements of domain walls are the origin of ferroelastic hysteresis and thus define ferroelasticity. EPSRC support led to a novel stroboscopic XRD-DMA diffractometer being developed at Cambridge. We shall explore how this method can be applied in to the problems of interest to the UK and Chinese groups working on mechanical spectroscopy of oxides.
