Summary on Grant Application Form
This will be an investigation of the structure of N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories and their solution via integrable systems and matrix models using the geometry of complex curves. Of central important will be uncovering the relation of the matrix model approach of Dijkgraaf-Vafa and the integrable system approach pioneered by the authors. One concrete approach to this will be to compactify the theory to two dimensions and then use mirror symmetry to relate the two approaches. Another is suggested by the fact that both the integrable systems and matrix models are related to the KP hierarchy. The technology will be applied to several new examples including quiver theories; five and six dimensional theories; and their marginal deformations. A general picture of the way these different examples are embedded in string and M theory will be uncovered and by this the relation between the geometry of the complex curve arising from the matrix model, integrable system and the geometrical embedding of branes in the string theory picture will be established. Finally an investigation of general vacua will be undertaken, including the exceptional ones related to higher genus surfaces.
