Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental programme of research is proposed to provide detailed information on the mean flow and turbulence structure of fully developed turbulent flow of shear thinning viscoelastic polymers in a rectangular duct of high aspect ratio (12) to provide 2D mean flow. The liquids will include semi-dilute (0.1%-0.2%) solutions of carbopol, carboxymethylcellulose, xanthan gum and polyacrylamide. Mean velocity and Reynolds stresses will be measured using LDA. Instantaneous turbulence structure (streaks and vortices) will be recorded using PIV. Emphasis will be placed on the high dragreduction regime for which turbulence intensity peaks prior to rapid attenuation. The aim is to provide a database for the development of turbulence models for drag-reducing liquids which in turn will provide a quantitative explanation for the phenomenon of drag reduction.
