Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the Centre is to provide a focal point for UK manufacturing industry to understand why they must change their businesses along sustainable lines, what strategic directions they require, what this will mean to them operationally and how they should go about implementation. In order to do this the CSM needs to help these firms to learn of existing best practice employing incremental and radical change that may require contingent reinterpretation across industry sectors as well as researching the next generation of manufacturing technologies, tools and applications. This will be achieved through an integrated programme of research focused through four inter-related themes, namely Sustainable Change, Sustainable Solutions, Sustainable Technologies and Sustainable Logistics. This research will involve a combination of central Flagship Projects within each thematic area lasting between three and five years as well as shorter more tightly focuses research projects. The types of existing industrial & research gaps that will be addressed include: how to embed change in organisations in order to get long term change as well as quick wins , how to improve the sustainability & life cycle management of products and services supplied beyond the pure manufacturing phase and how existing lean and agile improvement methods can be further developed to address wider economic & societal issues such as the desirability of global sourcing, productrecycling and sustainable transport systems.
