Summary on Grant Application Form
A new technique of measuring very small differences between the volumetric flows of two gas streams has been developed. This makes possible the measurement of the very small change in volumetric flow that result when two streams of gas mix together. This volumetric flow rate change only occurs if the gas mixture is non ideal. By mixing a small stream of perturbation gas into a large main flow of a gas mixture the method can be made differential. Mathematical analysis of the technique shows that the difference between the partial molar volume and the molar volume can be measured directly. Partial molar volumes are fundamental thermophysical properties which predictive computer models have to match. Consequently they provide a test of models as well as a measure of molecular interactions.
