This project will explore the application of data-mining techniques to the automatic construction of tactics from a large corpus of proofs. Tactics are computer programs which guide the proof search in automated theorem proving. These programs consist of applications of logical rules of inference composed with tacticals. Until recently, tactics have been manually constructed. This is a time-consuming and highly skilled process which has limited the more widespread uptake of this technology. The automatic construction of tactics would remove this impediment. The data-mining will consist of two stages. Firstly, frequently occurring sequences of proof steps will be identified using probabilistic reasoning. Secondly, these sequences will be used to seed a genetic programming process to combine the sequences with tacticals. This two stage process will create a family of tactics, whose effectivenesswill then be evaluated.
