With increased emphasis now being placed on whole-life costing and sustainable development, rather than simply initial expenditure, the use of stainless steel in construction is increasing. Previous research has shown that cold-formed stainless steel cross-sections contain material with proof strengths typically twice that specified in material standards. There is also large variation in material properties between different cross-section types and at different positions within a given cross-section. This research project would focus on devising a means for harnessing this considerable reserve of strength, generating more efficient structural design guidance, thereby promoting more widespread use of the material. Laboratory testing will be the key instrument for the generation of the fundamental data required, and once calibrated, numerical modelling will be used to investigate the importance of the individual parameters and to extend the range of available data. Design rules will be developed with structural engineers in mind, with careful consideration given to finding the right balance between accuracy of result and ease of calculation method. All new design guidance will be based on the Eurocode for structural stainless steel design, ENV 1993-1-4 (1996), with the aim that the work may be considered for incorporation into future revisions of the code. Dissemination of the findings to the academic community will be made by presentation at International conferences.
