Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will develop systems to enable room acoustic parameters to be extracted from music recorded in a space by bringing together the expertise within the Acoustics Research Centre within the University of Salford and the Centre for Digital Signal Processing Research at King's College London. It is proposed to use static and stochastic artificial neural networks, the latter utilising Hidden Markov Models. This system would enable measurements to be made using the everyday signals in a space, forming a non-invasive test method, which would facilitate occupied room measurement. This is a new approach, using modem tools, to resolve an old and unsolved problem. The work builds on a previous EPSRC study, which used speech as an excitation signal. While going from speech to music is conceptually simple, using music rather than speech creates major technical difficulties. Music has, however, potential to be a more useful test signal than speech, as it can enable all important frequency bands and room acoustic parameters to be extracted.
