A Platform Grant will enable the Optoelectronics Research Group to develop further its work on novel IIIN semiconductor integrated devices. Future device technology will need to provide more complex and diverse functionality reliably and at moderate cost. We therefore anticipate an increasing demand for single chips containing a large number of both active and passive device structures. We aim to build on our experience in monolithic photonic integration techniques, e.g. by incorporating photonic crystal and photonic wire structures, and our experience in guided-wave nonlinear optics to bring on board new technological developments - and make a significant contribution to future photonics technology. The development of practical high-performance devices and sub-systems cannot be achieved in isolation from clearly identified systems requirements. In order to ensure that we are aware of these new areas of activity, we shall build on our established links with industry and with other research groups, both within the UK and internationally. Platform Grant support will allow us to maintain and further develop the expertise of key research staff and will enhance the maintenance of the close interaction between experiment and theory required to improve our understanding of the complex physical processes that take place within devices and sub-systems.
