This proposal seeks to develop a new method for data mining which was developed under EPSRC grant GR/M80093. As a spin off from the research in that grant a framework based upon set theory was created for the analysis of matches between individuals who appear in multiple data files. The framework was developed to solve the problem of false matches when trying to match individuals across several data sets, this was originally in the context of licence plate surveys at several roadside locations but the framework developed is of general applicability. This proposal seeks to extend this original research and to place it within the context of existing research in the area of data mining and data analysis.This research seeks to extend the original method in several ways to increase its applicability. First, the original method needs to be extended to account for problems due to observational errors in data. Secondly, the method would be more useful if, in addition to providing an estimate of the number of false matches in a data set, it also gave the variance of this estimate. Finally, while software has been written which implements the original method, this needs documenting and making user friendly in order to be useful to other researchers. A small amount of effort could create an extremely useful data analysis tool for industry and commerce.
