Summary on Grant Application Form
Describe the proposed research using (about 200) words geared to the non-specialist reader. This proposal represents an extension of a recent collaboration between Dr. John de Mello from Imperial College London and Dr. Paul Lane from the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington DC. Drs de Mello and Lane have (separately) performed electroabsorption measurements on operational lightemitting diodes that indicate that the bulk semiconductor is fully screened from the applied field in many devices. The observation has far reaching implications for the understanding and optimisation of polymer light-emitting diodes. In this proposal, the applicants seek funds for Dr. Lane to visit Imperial College London to help establish a novel differential mode electroabsorption facility (developed by Dr. Lane), and to use this facility to investigate in greater detail the nature of the screening phenomenon.
