Summary on Grant Application Form
Gross plastic collapse or bursting is the fundamental failure mode of ductile pressure vessels subject to static loading. Currently, most design is based on elastic analysis or limit analysis. In both cases, material strain hardening and large structural deformation effects are neglected. These effects can be included in a full elastic-plastic analysis but the design guidelines given in pressure vessel codes are very limited for this type of analysis. Consequently, the pressure vessel industry is not utilising the best available technology in design practice. The proposed research will address this problem. The propopsal identifies the lack of a robust general criterion of plastic collapse as identified as the major impediment to successful implimentation of advanced analysis in pressure vessel design. The proposal defines six specific clear aims towards the specified objectiove of defining an innovative general criterion of plastic collapse and appropriate design methodology. The central or key task, to develop a general plastic collapse criterion, is innovative and represents significant adventure in research.
