Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have been awarded beamtime for soft-xray magnetic scattering studies of multilayer systems at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at Brookhaven in the USA. Unlike European Facilities such beamtime does not come with money to support travel to the facility. The experiments form part of our ongoing and highly successful joint programme on magnetic diffuse scattering between Leeds and ISIS. The experiments we shall carry out are diffuse scattering from systems with both nano-pattemed substrates to generate controlled structural roughness, and experimentally accessible Curie temperatures, so that it will be possible to fully separate the diffuse scattering arising from structure and magnetism. The grant request is for travel and subsistence funds only to allow a team of three people to travel to Brookhaven for three weeklong periods in order to operate the experiment 24 hours a day. Two previous trips, supported by other funds, have proven that the beamline will work with our samples. Very few soft-xray beamlines are equipped with scattering chambers, as most are equipped to do only dichroism experiments in the absorption mode. The NSLS setup is well-developed, to our knowledge the only system with the temperature and magnetic field control required for our purposes.
