Summary on Grant Application Form |
This platform grant addresses the area of new (non-telecom) photonic networking applications at both technology and network level; together with the continuation of research on future telecommunication networks . New applications for photonic networking have appeared in recent times, which can only be satisfied using optical technology. Grid computing places major demands on the network infrastructure, for example the need for high capacity transfer from a user to multiple destinations, low latency, interworking between many different optical domains. These needs place stringent demands on technologies such as tunable lasers, switch fabrics, network architectures and control and management. Such user empowered networks are radically different in design that telecommunication networks. In addition the growth in data and data records places increasing demands on data storage and storage network solutions. All of these areas require research on high speed access techniques. The purpose of this proposal, therefore, is to enable key staff to be retained, whilst these new areas are developed, allowing time for new proposals to be submitted (to EPSRC, EU and Industry)
