Summary on Grant Application Form
Salford University intends to appoint Dr. Lauri Koskela (Senior Research Scientist, VTT, Finland) as the star recruit from the industrial/research sector in order for SCRI's state-of-the-art and leading research in this area to penetrate industrial applications and fertilise academic thinking. This is a strategic appointment, which will enable SCRI to strengthen the application of theory and practice based tools in the built and human environment and to transfer knowledge to the healthcare sector considering the expertise and the wealth of experience of Dr. Koskela in dealing with industrial projects. This will also help SCRI in creating state of the art research and world-class body, for the application of IT in designing the overall built environment application for healthy living thus creating a strategic link with the healthcare sector. This proposal seeks 500K EPSRC funding to strengthen the Salford IMRC centre and to enable our integration efforts into healthcare within a built and human environment context. The Research Institute will bear the costs of appointing Dr Koskela within SCRI.The 500k requested is to cover the extra resources (research fellows/assistants/students) and other expenses to allow Dr. Koskela to achieve the strategic objectives of SCRI through an integrated framework that encompasses people, process, IT and management issues, such as theory based project and production management. This appointment will lead into 2M additional funds being attracted to develop a portfolio of research from the EPSRC, DTI and Europe, and create strong strategic links for SCRI with other European (such as the Nordic countries) and International (such as USA) countries. In particular, looking at Europe-wide Lean thinking and philosophies development through FP6 funding.
