Summary on Grant Application Form
Turbulence constitutes the most serious obstacle to a satisfactory description of the large majority of engineering and environmental flows. The problem of turbulence is in fact a set of several different, albeit related, problems, each one being determined by the way the turbulence is forced (.e.g boundary conditions). The most ambitious, yet realistic, vision one can now have for the next 5 years of turbulence research and which is offered in this proposal is to tackle a variety of turbulence problems (distinguished by the type of forcing which generates or distorts/modifies the turbulence) each one with a battery of complementary laboratory, numerical, modelling and theoretical techniques. Each one of these problems may require its own solution, yet approaches for one particular turbulence problem may be expected to stimulate solutions to others. The added value offered by this platform Imperial-Southampton group is not only in the variety and complementarity of its expertise (which is paramount) but also, quite importantly, in the variety of turbulence problems to be considered and in the group's ability to compare the differences and similarities between these problems with a potential for cross-fertilisation from one problem to the other. Approximately pounds 400k are sought on a 50% split between Southampton and Imperial for a total of 5 years starting mid 2004. Maximum emphasis is placed on flexibility, the ability and quickly react to new developments and quickly implement new ideas, particularly multidisciplinary ones which require the group's existing diverse expertise, and ensure continuity for a sustained long term group research effort and planning.
