Geomatics involves measuring, monitoring and managing spatial information about the earth and its infrastructure using advanced technology. As such it crosses the disciplines of mathematics, geography, ICT, physics, and many other subjects taught in schools. Established in 2001, geomatics.org.uk is supported by the EPSRC and the UK land and offshore survey industry. The aim is to raise the profile of mathematics, science, engineering and technology taught in schools and further education colleges across the UK by providing useful and timely geomatics based learning and teaching resources. Resources include schemes of work for various subjects plus contemporary geomatics instrumentation, data and software nominally out of reach of schools. All resources are aimed specifically at the National Curriculum and exam specifications and are provided free of charge to teachers at institutions that register with www.geomatics.org.uk. The management and distribution of the resources is operated on-line via the website, whilst a portfolio of INSET teacher training courses operates nationwide to initiate teachers into geomatics theory and practice. The website is not a stand-alone source of information; instead it operates as a portal to the UK land and offshore surveying industry, serving to promote the profession through raising public awareness of geomatics science, engineering and technology.
