This research proposal outlines the main topics we aim to explore with the benefit of a new communal computational facility. In broad terms, the proposal seeks to explore challenging, fundamental and topical problems within the field of materials chemistry and solid state science. Major themes of our research program include heterogeneous catalysis, electronic and magnetic properties of complex materials and nucleation and growth of inorganic materials. For a relatively modest sum of money, we propose to equip the laboratory with new visualisation stations and crucially, a new local computer facility, that will enable us to make best use of the state of the art simulation methodologies in this and other fields. The simulation studies will interact strongly with the experimental program within the DFRL.
